4-6 Boys Basketball

Attention Parents,
4th, 5th, and 6th grade boys basketball will begin on January 9th after school from 3:45-4:45/5:00.  We will combine 4th and 5th grade players for one team as well as the 5th and 6th grade for another team.  The 4th and 5th grade team will play against other 4th and 5th grade teams and the 5th and 6th will play against mostly 6th grade teams.  We play around 8 games and practice 3 times a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Games are typically played on Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 and 5:00.  I will send a letter home with interested students after Christmas break.

All players will get equal playing time and all boys in these grades are encouraged to come out and play.  We will focus on fundamentals, teamwork, rules of the game and having fun.  Please email me with any questions.

Athletics/PE Updates

Our 2011 Jogathon was a great success.  We raised almost $3,200.  We were very close to meeting our goal, but came up just short.  I want to thank all the students, teachers, parents and participants who made our fundraiser so successful.  I know the students had a great time and I hope that everyone else did as well.

Again, all of the money raised supports our athletic department and allows our students the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports in our coops and our host sports.  We had students participate in volleyball at Oak Grove, cross country at Fargo North, and now we have girls playing basketball at Oak Grove.

Our upcoming sports will start after the Christmas break.  4-6 grade boys basketball will start  in early January as will 7/8 boys basketball at Oak Grove.

For 7/8 grade athletes you will need to have a few forms filled out before they can practice.  Please come and see me for the forms, or email me and I can send them out to you.

Our school will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart this school year.  We will start this event/fundraiser in March.

Jogathon Pie Throw

The actual running of the Jog-a-thon went great!  We had a pretty good day for running, and the students did a great job during the event.

Now that the work is done, the fun part is still to come.  We will be doing the hula hoop, free throw competition, and pie throw on September 30th starting at 2:30 in the school gym.  The hula hoop contest will begin at 2:30, with the free throw competition after the hula hoopers get started.  Once all the students who qualified for the free throw competition are finished, we will name the winners and then begin throwing pies.

I want to thank Mr. J in advance for volunteering his services for this event.

Hope to see you all there with your continued support of GLS Athletics!

Jog-a-thon 2011

The Annual Grace Lutheran Jog-a-thon

When:  Friday, September 16th

            Grades 1-3 run from 9:30-11:00

            Grades 4-8 run from 1:00-2:30

Where:  Island Park in Fargo on the corner of 4th Street and 6th Avenue South.

What:  The Jog-a-thon is a fundraiser benefiting Grace Lutheran Athletics.  The students gather pledges/donations before the event and will run laps on a 400-meter course in the park to qualify to participate in competitions to win a prize. After achieving a set number of laps and pledges the students will participate in the prize competitions such as a free throw competition and hula hoop competition, as well as a chance to throw a pie at Mr. Wateland or Mr. Jay.  The class with the most pledges wins an ice cream party.

Why:  The money raised by students and families is what gives Grace Lutheran the opportunity to host athletic teams in our school as well as continue our cooperative teams with Oak Grove and Fargo North at the Junior High level.

The funds raised are used for our state athletic fees, paying coaches and officials, replacing old uniforms and equipment, and tournament fees.

This event is a great way to encourage our students to stay active through athletics, be a part of a team, enhance school pride as well as build relationships within the Grace Lutheran family.

Who:  All Grace Lutheran School students from 1st grade through 8th grade participate in the Jog-a-thon.  Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends are welcome to

walk or run in this event and donate their laps to a student.

Volunteers are needed for this event.  If you don’t want to walk or run laps we do need help counting the students’ laps as they run.

Attached to this letter is a pledge sheet for students.  While some people will donate a certain amount of money for each lap a child completes, we suggest that donors pay a lump sum.  Hopefully, through hard work and determination, our school can achieve the school goal of $3,500.

I want to thank you in advance for your constant support in donations and time you put forth for this fundraiser.  All of our faculty, coaches, and most importantly, students are truly grateful.  We hope and pray once again that the Jog-a-thon will be a success and an enjoyable time together.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.  GO ROYALS!

In Christ,

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the 2011-2012 school year at Grace Lutheran School!

This year is going to be a great year for GLS athletics.  Our Fall sport coops are underway.  We have many middle school athletes participating in FM Athletics Football, Oak Grove volleyball, and Fargo North Cross Country.

Our 4/5/6 girls basketball team will get started Tuesday, September 6th after school at 3:30.  Our season runs through October with 8 to 9 games and practices held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30-4:45.  There will be a sign-up sheet for those girls interested in playing basketball this fall in grades 4-6 at my table during back to school night.

Also, the 2011 Jog-a-thon is only a few weeks away.  This event raises the money necessary to provide our students the opportunity to participate in all of the sports that are offered here at Grace Lutheran School as well as our coop schools.  Information and pledge sheets will be sent home with your students the first week of school.

Please refer to this blog during the school year for all sport and PE related news.
